Softball Splits With Wittenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – After cold weather earlier in the week forced the two teams to reschedule, the Capital University and Wittenberg University softball teams were able to play the doubleheader. The Crusaders were unable to put together a solid inning in game one before turning things around in game two.

Game 1 vs Wittenberg, L 6-2

Wittenberg (7-7) jumped in front early, scoring five runs in the first two innings. The first two runs were scored when sophomore infielder Casey Hobbs slapped a ball over the fence down the left line. The home run also scored teammate Kaela Hughes. A third run was added on a Chelsea Zang ground out which brought Charlee Clark in for the score.

The Tigers added another homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning from Clark.

Capital (11-6) did not score a run until the top of the seventh inning when Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) crossed home plate, thanks to sophomore catcher Kat Boyer, who doubled to left centerfield. Boyer scored on the next at bat as Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) found the gap in right field for a double.

Capital's three hits came from Julia Jennings (Dover, Ohio), Boyer, and Becker. Both Boyer and Becker added an RBI.

Hobbs went 3-for2 at the plate, finishing with three RBIs and a run.

Game 2 vs Wittenberg, W 7-3

The Crusaders built an early 3-run lead in the first inning, capitalizing on four errors from the Tigers.

A Wittenberg error allowed outfielder Kelsey Swain (Pickerington, Ohio) to reach first base. Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) advanced Swain to second base with a base hit to the pitcher. With LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) batting third, another error advanced each runner two bases, resulting in an unearned run from Swain. Staten eventually reached home plate due to a wild pitch from Wittenberg.

Swain helped Capital increase its lead in the top of the fourth, doubling down the left line. The hit brought Pam Vickers (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) in for the run, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio).

With a 5-0 lead, Capital only allowed three runs and added to more of its own to hold on to a 7-3 victory.

Patznick pitched all seven innings, recorded two strikeouts and allowing only four hits. Her record now stands at 5-3 on the season.
