RICHMOND, Ind. – The Capital University women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2014-15 season in dramatic fashion over Earlham College, Sunday afternoon. Alyssa Trier pulled down the match-deciding point to give Capital the win.
Tied 4-4 in the match, Trier competed out of the No. 4 spot in the Capital lineup. After dropping the opening set, 4-6, she came back and won the second set, 6-3, to even it up against Earlham's Ayami Shoji. Their match then went to a super tiebreaker, and all courts turned their attentions to the ongoing battle.
Trier (Venetia, Pa.) trailed but fought off three match points before finally overcoming Shoji, 12-10, to take her individual match and give Capital the win. The final score of the match was 5-4.
Capital (1-3) held the advantage coming out of doubles play, 2-1. Trier teamed up Jennie Schott to claim Capital's first point of the day in the second doubles flight by a score of 8-4 over Jordyn Grimes and Vesta Davis. The tandem of Corinne Hohenstein and Taylor Jenkins also claimed victory with an 8-5 win of Olivia Bispott and Arrita Domi.
When it came to singles play, the Quakers evened up the bout with wins in the top two flights. Claire Welsh outlasted Ashlin Gable (6-2, 7-6 [7-4]) while Anna Gubanova took care of Julia Lucas, 6-0, 6-2.
Hohenstein and Schott earned victories in the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, respectively. After Domi defeated Jenkins, it set the table for Trier's dramatic ending.
Capital has three more matches remaining in the fall season between two different dates. Next up is a match with Franciscan University on Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m.
