The Capital University baseball team wrapped up its 2014 season Friday with back-to-back losses at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Berea, Ohio.
The Crusaders (11-23 overall, 2-16 OAC) dropped the first game 14-4 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap.
In the second game, Capital scored first but the Yellow Jackets (22-16, 11-7) tallied four in the third to take the lead for good.
Senior third baseman Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio) knocked in the first run of the contest, plating senior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.) with a single up the middle in the top of the first.
Junior left fielder Christian Ross (Bucyrus, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to plate another run, and freshman pinch hitter Logan Bastin (Lexington, Ohio) added an RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Freshman right fielder Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio) registered two hits to lead the Crusaders' offense.
Freshman RHP Tyler Spears (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) started and took the loss for Capital, dropping to 0-3 for the year. Seniors Jeremy Finchum (Galloway, Ohio), Jared Lee (North Bend, Ohio) and freshman Jacob Sheaf (Cincinnati, Ohio) all recorded relief appearances on the mound.
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets scored in all but one of their at-bats and out-hit the Crusaders 17-4.
Senior right-hander Justin Hoying (Ft. Loramie, Ohio) started on the mound and dropped to 1-4 with the loss. Senior lefty Kevin Brennan (Mason, Ohio), freshman RHP Michael Davis (Fairfield, Ohio) and senior righty Michael Flegal (Akron, Ohio) each made appearances in relief.
Capital manufactured four runs in the top of the ninth, taking advantage of three Baldwin Wallace errors to put two runners on with two outs. Freshman Justin Ennis, pinch-hitting for sophomore catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio), hit a three-run homer, the first of his career, to account for the final margin.
Boehm, Ennis, junior shortstop Austin Underwood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and junior first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) posted one hit apiece to lead the Crusaders.
Despite the loss of 13 seniors, Capital returns a number of veteran players, including rising seniors Underwood, Carnahan, Ross, catcher Taylor Patterson (West Milton, Ohio), RHPs Robert Fravel (Port Clinton, Ohio) and Derek Colston (Port Clinton, Ohio).
