DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team played its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday, dropping a 15-4 contest at Ohio Wesleyan at Littick Field.
The Crusaders (11-19 overall) out-hit the Battling Bishops 14-12, but left 12 runners on base and committed six errors in the field.
Ohio Wesleyan (10-19) tallied two or more runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings to take a commanding 12-2 advantage through four frames.
Junior shortstop Austin Underwood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) totaled four hits – all singles – to lead the offense. Senior designated hitter Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio), junior first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) and freshman third baseman Logan Bastin (Lexington, Ohio) each contributed with two hits for Capital.
Senior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.), who reached twice and stole two bases, scored the game's first run on a balk. The Crusaders added one more in the fourth as senior right fielder Andy Grillo (McArthur, Ohio) crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Capital plated one in the fifth on a two-out, run-scoring double by Bastin. The Crusaders added one more in the eighth on a two-out, pinch-hit single by junior Christian Ross (Bucyrus, Ohio).
Senior right-hander Jeremy Finchum (Galloway, Ohio) started on the mound and took the loss for Capital, falling to 2-4 on the year. Junior Derek Colston (Port Clinton, Ohio), sophomore lefty Adam Journic (Akron, Ohio), freshmen Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W.Va.) and Jacob Sheaf (Cincinnati, Ohio) each pitched relief stints.
The Crusaders return to Ohio Athletic Conference play this Saturday against Ohio Northern. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
Following the game, all 14 of Capital's seniors will be recognized in a brief, on-field ceremony.
