Baseball Drops Two at John Carroll

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Capital University baseball team was unable to grab momentum heading into the Easter break Friday with consecutive losses at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at University Heights, Ohio.

The Crusaders (11-18 overall, 2-12 OAC) were shut out 6-0 in Game 1 before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.

In the second game, the Blue Streaks (18-10, 10-4) tallied once in the second and three times in the third to take control of the contest early on.

Junior shortstop Austin Underwood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) posted two hits to lead Capital, which registered six hits for the contest but left five runners on base. Senior outfielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio), sophomore catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio), freshman first baseman Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and freshman second baseman Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio) recorded one hit apiece for the Crusaders.

Freshman right-hander Tyler Spears (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) started and went five innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out three. He dropped to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Senior lefty Kevin Brennan (Mason, Ohio) tossed three innings of scoreless relief after coming on for Spears to start the sixth.

In the opener, John Carroll broke open a close game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior RHP Justin Hoying (Ft. Loramie, Ohio) fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, allowing four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings, striking out five over that span. Senior left-hander Jared Lee (North Bend, Ohio) pitched to a pair of batters after replacing Hoying in the eighth before freshman righty Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W.Va.) took over and tossed the final 2/3 of the eighth inning.

Boehm led Capital with two hits, while Branisel and junior first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) each tallied a hit.

The Crusaders return to play Wednesday for a single game at Ohio Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
