COLUMBUS – A first for the Capital University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, as they defeated Wilmington 25-5 for the varsity program's first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference victory.
After tallying the game's initial score, the Quakers responded with two unanswered goals of their own, taking a 2-1 lead with 24:01 remaining in the opening half.
Following a Capital timeout, the Crusaders responded with 13 goals in-a-row to take a commanding 14-1 lead with 4:48 left in the first half of play.
Both teams traded goals over the remaining time of the half, as the Crusaders were in full command at halftime with a 12 goal advantage.
At the half, Capital was outshooting Wilmington 24-8, having forced the Quakers into 20 first half turnovers.
As the second half of play unfolded, the Crusaders managed to score five straight goals to open the period, before the Quakers responded with back-to-back goals of their own, cutting their deficit to 20-5 with 11:13 left in the final half.
Capital finished the game on a 5-0 scoring run, eventually sealing a dominating 20 goal victory, improving to .500 in OAC play.
Leading the way for the Crusaders was freshman midfielder Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio), who scored a game-high eight goals, six of them coming in the first half, while also posting five assists on the afternoon as well.
Sophomore midfielder Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio) followed with five goals, while also picking up one assist and causing a pair of turnovers in the win.
Freshman attack Miranda Stellini (Dublin, Ohio) also had a stellar outing, recording four goals, giving her 13 goals in Capital's last five contests, while also tacking on an assist in the game as well.
A trio of Crusaders also tallied two goals, as junior attack Carly Pries (Hilliard, Ohio), as well as freshman attack Marlee McCloud (Milford, Ohio) and classmate Shannon Walton (Fairview Park, Ohio), while McCloud checked in with two assists, Pries with one.
Sophomore attack Conner Quick (Grove City, Ohio) and freshman defender Alexis Jurgensen (Canton, Ohio) each scored one goal on the afternoon. Fellow freshman in goalie Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) picked up her ninth win in goal so far this season, saving nine shots on a total of 14 faced for the game.
With the win, Capital (9-2 overall, 1-1 OAC) is now set to travel to cross-town rival Otterbein this coming Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. start in Westerville, Ohio.
