COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's tennis team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday with a 9-0 setback against Baldwin Wallace at the Capital Tennis Courts.
Playing in their first home match of the spring, the Crusaders (0-4 overall, 0-1 OAC) were defeated in all three doubles spots and suffered straight set losses in all six singles positions.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win.
Senior Sara Ireland (Charleston, W.Va.) and junior Corinne Hohenstein (Sidney, Ohio) came close at the No. 3 doubles slot, falling 8-5 against Claire Watts and Whitney Yoder. Senior Elisabeth McLaughlin (Granville, Ohio) and junior Alyssa Trier (Venetia, Pa.) also played in a tight match, eventually dropping an 8-4 decision.
Trier nearly forced a third set at No. 1 singles against Kelsey Blatt, but was edged 6-0, 6-4.
Capital continues league play next Saturday at Otterbein. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Westerville.
