The Capital University baseball team concluded a 5-3 spring break trip Friday and Saturday with a pair close games, earning a split on their final two days at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
On Friday, the Crusaders (5-3 overall) posted their second walk-off win of the trip and third victory in their final at-bat in a 7-6 triumph in 11 innings over Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
Capital completed the week Saturday at Lake Myrtle Park with an 8-5 setback against Aurora (Ill.).
Against Concordia-Moorhead (2-4), freshman designated hitter Logan Bastin (Lexington, Ohio) recorded an infield single in the bottom of the 11th to score senior left fielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio) from third base and send the Crusaders home victorious.
Bastin finished the day with a team-high three hits, while Branisel was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Senior right fielder Andy Grillo (McArthur, Ohio) totaled two hits and scored a run, while junior first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) knocked in a pair of runs.
Senior right-hander Jeremy Finchum (Galloway, Ohio) picked up his first win of the season, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair in two innings of relief. Senior Justin Hoying (Ft. Loramie, Ohio) tossed the first nine innings, scattering 11 hits and allowing four earned runs in his second start of the year.
Capital manufactured a run in the first inning as Branisel singled to right to bring home senior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.), who walked, moved up on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third by Grillo.
The Cobbers responded with two in the top of the second and, after each team plated a run in their next two at-bats, the Crusaders took a 5-3 advantage with three in the bottom of the third. Carnahan knocked a two-run single to center, and sophomore catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio) walked with the bases loaded.
Concordia took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth before Capital tied the game in the bottom half of the frame when senior shortstop Brian Wyer's bunt single moved senior second baseman Anthony Calabrese (Hudson, Ohio) to third before Calabrese scored on a throwing error to tie it.
Statistics from the Crusaders' game against Aurora (1-0) were not yet available.
Capital resumes play on March 11 at Denison before opening the home portion of its schedule March 12 against Ohio-Lancaster.
