COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's basketball team suffered a tough setback in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Thursday evening, falling 82-72 against Wilmington at the Capital Center.
The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 5, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
A game of runs in the opening ten minutes of the first half led to the Crusaders taking an 11 point advantage at the 12:04 mark, before the Quakers stormed back with a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to 20-18.
Both Capital and Wilmington went back and forth in scoring from that point forward for the remainder of the opening half, as the Crusaders capitalized on multiple three-point shots and worked their way into the bonus with just under six minutes left in the first half.
The Crusaders connected on 4-8 shots from behind the arc in the opening half (48.1 percent), while also converting 10-12 foul shots (83.3 percent), tying the game at 40 apiece at halftime.
At the break, the Quakers were shooting 55.6 percent from the field, including 5-8 from three-point range.
As the second half of play began, Wilmington put together a 12-0 run in the first four minutes, taking a 52-40 lead. However, the Crusaders were able to stay strong, orchestrating a 7-0 run and battling back to within five points at 54-49 with 13:02 left in the second frame.
Capital pulled to within one possession at 62-60 with 6:56 remaining in the game, but to no avail, as the Crusaders eventually fell by 10 points.
Leading the way for the Crusaders was junior forward Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) scoring 15 points on 5-8 shooting, while tallying a team-high seven rebounds.
Freshmen guards Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio) and Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio) totaled 14 and 11 points, respectively, combining for a 4-10 shooting mark from behind the arc.
Junior forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio) chipped in eight points and two rebounds.
In total, Capital shot 22-50 from the field (44 percent), connecting on 22-30 shots from the charity stripe, while Wilmington posted a 26-49 shooting mark (53.1 percent), while converting 23-32 shots from the foul line.
With the loss, Capital (9-11 overall) fall to 6-7 in OAC play with just five games remaining in the regular season. Next contest for the Crusaders is this Saturday at John Carroll.
Tip-off in University Heights, Ohio, is slated for 2 p.m.
