The Capital University baseball team won its third one-run game of the year before falling against a nationally-ranked opponent Wednesday in contests played at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
The Crusaders (4-2 overall) hung on to defeat Alma (Mich.) 11-10 in the opener, then suffered a 12-3 setback in a rain-shortened seven-inning game against No. 22 Augustana (Ill.).
Against Alma (3-2), Capital pounded out 14 hits and led 11-5 through 7 1/2 innings. The Scots tallied five runs in the eighth, but the Crusaders held on to pick up the victory.
Senior right fielder Andy Grillo (McArthur, Ohio) led the Capital offense with team-highs of three hits and three runs batted in. Senior second baseman Anthony Calabrese (Hudson, Ohio), junior first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) and sophomore catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio) tallied two hits apiece, while Boehm knocked in a pair.
Senior shortstop Brian Wyer (New Albany, Ohio) scored three runs, while senior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.) and freshman designated hitter Logan Bastin (Lexington, Ohio) each touched home plate twice.
Senior right-hander Sam Sifferlin (Wooster, Ohio) picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the season, tossing three scoreless innings in relief of starter Derek Colston (Port Clinton, Ohio). Sophomore lefty Adam Journic (Akron, Ohio) recorded his first career save, striking out a pair in the ninth.
After two straight innings going down in order and trailing 3-0, the Crusaders scored two in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a five-run lead. Freshman reliever Brendon Borkey (Mentor, Ohio) induced a lineout to right with a runner on second to end Alma's threat to tie or take the lead in the eighth.
Against Augustana (3-1), Capital fell behind quickly as the Vikings tallied three times in the first and finished with 19 hits in the contest.
Carnahan knocked in a run on a ground ball in the first, also reaching on an error on the play. Freshman Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio) accounted for the Crusaders' other runs, sending home a pair on a single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Senior LHP Kevin Brennan (Mason, Ohio) took the loss to fall to 0-1.
Following a day off Thursday, Capital returns to play Friday against Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at 11 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale.
