Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team dropped to 2-4 overall following its 78-66 loss to Mount St. Joseph University, Sunday evening.
Four out of five Capital starters finished with 10 or more points, but The Mount (3-1) bested them by placing all five of its starters plus one of its reserves in double-digit point totals. Senior post player Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) led both teams with a game-high 19 points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Lions used a 6-0 run at the end of the first half to separate themselves from the Crusaders and started the second half strongly to sustain that advantage. Capital was able to put up just one shot attempt in the final two minutes of the first half, plus two turnovers hampered their attack in response to the run.
With the score 33-27, The Mount's Bobby Murdock hit a three-point shot to gain a nine-point advantage. A three-point play via a successful layup and a converted free throw, which stemmed from a Capital foul on the attempt, broke it open to a 10-point game.
The Crusaders responded by scoring six of the game's next eight points to cut the lead the four points. Charles English (Cincinnati, Ohio) trimmed the lead even further with a break to the basket that brought the disadvantage to three points, 47-44. With 10 minutes remaining, Joel Scudder and Bobby Murdock hit threes in back-to-back possessions to break it open once again.
Capital put together one final rally that again brought them within one possession of tying the game. AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio/Bradley) hit a three pointer and following a Lions' miss, Ben Donhoff (Clyde, Ohio) hit a jumper that made for a two-point game, 57-55, with 7:32 to go. The Crusaders then struggled from the field, going 5:44 without hitting a field goal while The Mount outscored them 17-6.
Joining Bolka in double figures was English (12), Geise (11) and Danhoff (10). English also chipped in five rebounds and two steals, while Geise added four boards and two assists.
Capital was marred by 14 team turnovers, eight of which came in the first half. Twelve Lions points came off of those turnovers. The Crusaders outrebounded the Lions, 31-25.
All five Mount St. Joseph starters finished with 10 or more points, led by Murdock's 14 points. Ken Kunkle came off the bench and added 10 points to make for six different players to end the night in double figures.
Capital will play its next two games at home, beginning with the defending Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Champion, Wilmington College, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. They will then play John Carroll University on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. as part of a Capital basketball doubleheader at the Capital Center.
