Strong Opening Half Leads Crusaders to Victory Over Wittenberg

Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital Crusaders earned their first win of the season by defeating Wittenberg University, 63-46, at the Capital Center on Tuesday night. AJ Dixon and Ben Danhoff led the Crusaders with 20 points each, aiding Capital in evening up their overall record at 1-1.

A strong start to the game for Capital helped set the tone of the duration of the contest. They responded to the Tigers' scoring the game's first four points by going on a 13-2 run over a seven-minute span of time. Ben Danhoff (Clyde, Ohio) hit three jump shots in a row and was complemented by AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio/Bradley) hitting a three-pointer to help build a 13-6 early.

The Tigers clawed back into the contest with a mini-run of their own that brought the game back to within a point, but at no point did Capital relinquish the lead. Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) came alive during Capital's second run that took the Crusaders' lead into double digits. He finished the first half with four points.

Wittenberg (0-2) struggled shooting from the very start, hitting just 17.9 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half. That mark helped Capital take a 33-17 lead into halftime.

Dixon took the Capital lead to as many as 16 points early in the second half. The trio of Bolka, Danhoff and Dixon helped maintain a double-digit lead for the duration of the game. The Tigers' physical play helped Capital leap into the bonus near the midway point of the second half and reached the double bonus with eight minutes to go in the game. Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio), Adam Blake (Kingston, Ohio) and Danhoff all finished the game perfect from the charity stripe, combining for eight makes. The Crusaders finished at a 61.3 percent clip for the game.

Danhoff's 20 points served as a new career high for the fifth year senior. He earned the start and went 9for-13 from the field and added seven rebounds.

Dixon, who also finished with 20 points, went 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc. He added five rebounds and two steals toward the winning cause.

After putting up career highs in points (27) and rebounds (17) against Thomas More College earlier this week, Bolka was held to just eight points but did chip in a game-high 10 rebounds.

As a team, Capital shot 45.7 percent from the floor and went 2-for-6 from three-point range just days after being unable to hit one in 14 attempts against the Saints.

With the loss, the Tigers now fall to 0-2 on the season. They finished shooting just 27.8 percent from field-goal range and went 3-for-21 from three-point land. Jaelin Williams led the Tigers with 17 points and added seven rebounds.

The Crusaders will next head into a weekend tournament at Roanoke College. They will open their two-day stay with Methodist College on Friday, Nov. 21, at 4:30 p.m. They will play a second game on Saturday against an opponent to be named later.
