DELAWARE, Ohio – Capital University's men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season Friday evening, recording a 2-1 victory over Colorado College on day one of the Fred Myers Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan.
The Crusaders knew they were facing a challenge, as Colorado College is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, entering the 2013 season looking to notch the program's 20th appearance in the big dance.
The Tigers tallied the first goal of the match in the thirtieth minute, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the first half, the Crusaders were outshot 7-2, while also being held to zero penalty kicks in the opening frame.
However, the second half of play would prove to be much different for the Crusaders, as they netted two goals in a span of just over seven minutes.
The game-tying goal came in the fifty-sixth minute on an unusual assist from senior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber, who punted the ball past the opposition's side of the field, to which senior Nick Eley headed the ball off the bounce and over the goalie to tie the match at 1-1.
Just over seven minutes later, the Crusaders took the lead for the first time in the game on yet another quirky goal.
Senior Tim McCarthy knocked the ball loose from the Tigers goalkeeper, proceeding to then tap the ball into the net for the decisive goal.
Leading the way for the Crusaders was Eley and McCarthy, both with their first goal of the season, while Weisgarber stopped seven of the eight shots on goal that he faced.
Next up for Capital (2-0) is another top caliber non-conference opponent in Christopher Newport (Va.), on the final day of the Fred Myers Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan.
First kick of the match is slated for 5 p.m. on Sept. 7.
