Day two of the Capital-Otterbein Volleyball Opener took place on Saturday morning, as the Crusaders squared off against another a pair of non-conference opponents.
Capital took to home court in their first match against Trine (Ind.) with both teams coming in with a 1-1 record stemming from the previous evening's season-opening matches.
The Crusaders jumped out to a commanding 2-0 set lead in the match, thanks to a stellar team performance on both sides of the ball.
However, the third set proved to be a battle, as the Thunder would storm back in the frame to take the lead for an extended stretch of time.
But the Crusaders hung around with scrappy play down the stretch, before falling 25-22 in the third set.
In the fourth set of the match, both teams traded points for quite some time until the Thunder took control, winning three of the final four points to even the match at two games apiece.
Throughout the fifth and final set, the Crusaders were in command the majority of the way leading to a 15-11 victory to seal the Crusaders second win of the season.
A pair of freshman led the way in kills during the match for the Crusaders, as Hanna Ewart and Courtney McCracken tallied 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Junior Kelly Leonard also played a key role in the team's victory, recording 41 digs en route to another impressive performance.
The afternoon matchup for the Crusaders brought a test to the opposing side of the net in Rose Hulman (Ind.), who was coming off a 3-2 loss to Denison earlier in the day.
Capital won the first set in swift fashion, tallying five of the sets first six points in their own favor, leading to a 25-15 victory.
However, Rose-Hulman put together three straight set wins on their way to a come from behind 3-1 match victory over the Crusaders.
All three of the final sets were won by five or more points.
Leading the way in kills for the Crusaders was McCracken, who recorded a team-high 13 to accompany 15 digs, while sophomore Olivia Arledge tallied a total of 12 kills.
Ewart followed with 10 kills and seven digs of her own, while Leonard came up with a team-high 20 digs.
McCracken represented the Crusaders in being named to the all-tournament team, along with Albion's Jalyn Ingalls, Defiance's Chelsea Ludeman, Denison's Brittany Perry, Kenyon's Sierra DeLeon, Otterbein's Kim Barker, Rose-Hulman's Sarah Jensen, and Trine's Taylor Rabel.
With the split in the final day of the season-opener, Capital now stands with a record of 2-2 on the young season.
Next match for the Crusaders is against Denison in the Capital Center on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
