The Capital University women's tennis team played close, competitive matches in both singles and doubles Tuesday but was defeated 9-0 at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual contest in Berea, Ohio.
The Crusaders dropped to 6-7 overall and suffered their first loss in conference play, falling to 3-1 in league play. The Yellow Jackets improved to 5-8, including a 2-1 mark in OAC play.
Freshmen Ashlin Gable (Bluffton, Ohio) and Julia Lucas (Erie, Pa.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles, where they were narrowly bested 8-5. Juniors Kathryn MacFarland (Clyde, Ohio) and Elisabeth McLaughlin (Granville, Ohio) also took a close loss, falling 8-6 at the third doubles spot.
In singles play, freshman Jennie Schott (Pickerington, Ohio) took a set off Mackenzie Donalson at No. 4, but was outlasted 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Capital bowed out without taking a game in only two sets in singles play.
The Crusaders resume league competition this Saturday at Muskingum. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. in New Concord, Ohio.
