COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's tennis team took four matches in either three sets or one set by tiebreaker Saturday to grind to a 7-2 victory over Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match at Capital.
The Crusaders (5-5 overall, 2-0 OAC) remained unbeaten in league play with the victory and improved on its performance against the Pioneers (1-7, 1-1) from last season, when they took five of nine matches in a win.
The freshman duo of Ashlin Gable (Bluffton, Ohio) and Julia Lucas (Erie, Pa.) was responsible for three Capital points. Gable and Lucas combined at No. 1 doubles for a 9-8 (4) victory to help the Crusaders claim two of the three doubles matches.
Gable then outlasted Marietta's Cate Gisser with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 triumph at the top singles spot. Lucas registered a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win at the second singles position.
Junior Elisabeth McLaughlin (Granville, Ohio), sophomore Corinne Hohenstein (Sidney, Ohio) and freshman Jennie Schott (Pickerington, Ohio) also posted singles victories. McLaughlin was a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner at third singles, while Schott and Hohenstein recorded straight-set victories at the Nos. 4 and 5 slots, respectively.
McLaughlin teamed with fellow junior Kathryn MacFarland (Clyde, Ohio) for an 8-4 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
The Crusaders concluded the day with a non-conference dual match against Wooster, an 8-1 setback. Sophomore Rebecca Hunt (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted the lone win in the match, a 7-6 (2), 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory at No. 5 singles. Capital dropped to 5-6 overall with the loss, while the Scots improved to 7-7.
The Crusaders return to OAC play this Tuesday at Baldwin Wallace. Match time is set for 4 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
