The Capital University baseball team fell in consecutive games Saturday at No. 3 Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Marietta, Ohio.
The Crusaders (12-9 overall, 2-4 OAC) suffered an 11-0 setback in the opener before dropping the second contest 6-2.
The Pioneers, who won the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship and are currently ranked third in the nation by D3baseball.com, improved to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
In the opener, Marietta took advantage of two big innings, posting six runs in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the sixth. The Crusaders were outhit 16-5 and committed a pair of crucial errors in the contest.
Junior right-hander Justin Hoying (Ft. Loramie, Ohio) pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and fell to 2-2 with the loss. Sophomore pitcher Derek Colston (Port Clinton, Ohio) tossed the final 2/3 of an inning and didn't allow a run.
Junior shortstop Brian Wyer (New Albany, Ohio) led Capital with two hits and reached base in all three of his plate appearances. Junior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.), senior designated hitter Dean Langholz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior third baseman Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio) posted one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, the Crusaders tallied two runs in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 advantage. Senior right fielder Patrick Jackson (Grove City, Ohio) plated a run with a single, and, htree batters later, sophomore designated hitter Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) scored Campbell on a sacrifice fly.
Marietta proceeded to plate six unanswered runs, recording one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Junior left fielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio) and freshman catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio) totaled two hits apiece to lead Capital. Jackson, Carnahan and senior second baseman Jacob Thuman (Westerville, Ohio) each registered a hit.
Senior Garrett Griffin (Grandview, Ohio) pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs. He dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
The Crusaders visit non-conference foe Denison for a 7 p.m. game in Granville, Ohio, on Tuesday. Capital hosts Baldwin Wallace Wednesday for an OAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Clowson Field.
