The Capital University baseball team posted its third straight win Tuesday, defeating Thomas More 6-1 in a non-conference game at Crestview Hills, Ky.
The Crusaders (17-14 overall) tallied six unanswered runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to move past the Saints (22-9).
Junior pitcher Kevin Brennan (Mason, Ohio) tossed six innings of two-hit baseball to pick up his first win of the season. The left-hander walked two and struck out a pair.
Thomas More plated a run in the third and held the lead until the top of the seventh inning. Capital took the lead on a clutch two-out, two-run single through the right side by senior Jacob Thuman (Westerville, Ohio). The base hit scored senior centerfielder Patrick Jackson (Grove City, Ohio) and junior right fielder Andy Grillo (McArthur, Ohio) and give the Crusaders an advantage they wouldn't relinquish.
Capital tacked on another run in the eighth on a solo home run by junior shortstop Anthony Calabrese (Hudson, Ohio), his first long ball of the season.
The Crusaders plated three more in the top of the ninth on back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) senior designated hitter Brandon Natale (Westerville, Ohio). Junior third baseman Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio) scored Carnahan on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat.
Junior left fielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio) finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead Capital. Thuman, Natale and Grillo contributed with two hits apiece to lead the Crusaders, who outhit the Saints 11-4 in the game.
Capital hosts Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference contest this Thursday at 4 p.m. at Clowson Field.
