The Capital University men's tennis team continued its strong play and continued to be unbeaten in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tuesday with a 6-3 triumph at Mount Union.
The Crusaders (10-3 overall, 5-0 OAC) are now in a three-way tie for first place with Ohio Northern and Baldwin Wallace, its opponent this Friday.
The Purple Raiders dropped to 11-5 and 2-4 in conference play.
Capital started the contest by taking two of three doubles matches. Senior John Murray (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and sophomore Kenny Duncan (Poland, Ohio) teamed up for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. The freshmen pair of Gian Carlo DiMichelangelo (Westerville, Ohio) and Jared Judson (Dublin, Ohio) scored a narrow 9-8 win at the third doubles spot to give the Crusaders the early lead.
Murray and DiMichelangelo continued their winning play in singles. Murray knocked off Patrick Yackmack 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, while DiMichelangelo bested Ben Swope 6-4, 6-2 at the fifth slot.
Freshman Spencer Walter (Hilliard, Ohio) clinched the match for Capital with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at third singles. Classmate Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio) recovered from a first-set loss to beat Nate Fockler 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at the top singles spot.
The Crusaders' showdown against fellow first-place Baldwin Wallace is slated for 3:30 p.m. this Friday at the Capital tennis courts.
