COLUMBUS – The Capital University baseball team recovered from a first-game loss to take the second game and post a split Friday against Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (13-11 overall, 3-5 OAC) fell in the opener 9-2 but flipped the script in the nightcap, defeating the Yellow Jackets 10-3.
With the loss, Baldwin Wallace (17-6, 6-2) is now tied for second place in the league standings with Otterbein. Capital is tied for fifth place just under half way through the conference season.
The Crusaders struck early in the second game as junior second baseman Anthony Calabrese (Hudson, Ohio) put the team on the board with single to score junior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.), who led off the affair with a single then stole second base. Three batters later, senior shortstop Jacob Thuman (Westerville, Ohio) plated Calabrese and sophomore catcher Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) with a sharp, two-out base hit up the middle.
After the Yellow Jackets tallied three unanswered to tie it at 3-3, Capital retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Calabrese continued his strong day with an RBI single and the Crusaders took advantage of a pair of Baldwin Wallace errors to add two more. After Carnahan walked in a run, Thuman hit a grounder to first that hopped over the head of the first baseman to score two more to make it 9-3.
Capital tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Carnahan singled in junior left fielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio).
Junior right-hander Jeremy Finchum improved to 3-1 on the season with his first complete game of the season. The Galloway, Ohio, native scattered seven hits and allowed just two earned runs in the victory.
Thuman was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the offense, which pounded out 15 hits in the game. Carnahan added three hits and two RBIs, while Campbell, Calabrese and Pearson each registered a pair of hits.
In the opener, Baldwin Wallace scored in each of the first three innings and never trailed in the contest. Calabrese and fellow junior Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio) each totaled two hits and an RBI to lead Capital in the affair.
Junior pitcher Justin Hoying (Ft. Loramie, Ohio) took the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season. He tossed the first 4 1/3 innings before being replaced by junior lefty Anthony Klamic (Wooster, Ohio), who pitched the next 1 2/3. Freshman right-hander Tyler Griego (Hillsboro, Ohio) tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the Crusaders.
Capital hosts Muskingum tomorrow in an OAC doubleheader at Clowson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
