COLUMBUS – The Capital University baseball team used a combination of timely offense and strong pitching to win the first game of a doubleheader 10-1 over John Carroll Friday in Ohio Athletic Conference play at Clowson Field.
The Crusaders (10-6 overall, 1-1 OAC) dropped the second game, 14-6. The twin bill was the team's first this season against conference competition.
In the opener, junior right-hander Justin Hoying (Fort Loramie, Ohio) scattered four runs and four walks while striking out four in seven innings in the complete-game victory. Hoying (2-1) stranded seven John Carroll base runners and took advantage of 11 ground ball outs.
Offensively, eight of Capital's nine hitters recorded a hit as the team finished with 12 hits overall. Junior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in, while senior designated hitter Dean Langholz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted two hits, a run and an RBI. Senior right fielder Patrick Jackson (Grove City, Ohio) and junior shortstop Brian Wyer (New Albany, Ohio) added two hits apiece.
After three scoreless innings, the Crusaders got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including four plated with two outs. Sophomore Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.) started the rally with a double to left, followed by run-scoring singles from Langholz and junior third baseman Ryan Pearson (Springfield, Ohio). Campbell singled through the right side to score two more.
The Blue Streaks (12-6, 1-1) ended Hoying's shutout bid in the top of the fifth, but Capital responded with five unanswered runs, including four in the sixth, when junior second baseman Jacob Thuman (Westerville, Ohio) keyed the inning with a two-run base hit.
In the second contest, John Carroll broke a 6-6 tie with four runs in the top of the sixth and ended up tallying eight unanswered runs through the end of the game. The Crusaders nearly matched the Blue Streaks' 12 hits with 11 of their own, but committed five errors in the field.
Junior left fielder Taylor Branisel (South Euclid, Ohio) registered three hits and three RBIs. Wyer totaled two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Campbell posted two hits, a run scored and two stolen bases. Junior right fielder Andy Grillo (McArthur, Ohio) contributed with two hits and a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Flegal (Akron, Ohio) took the loss in relief to drop to 1-2 on the season. Senior Garrett Griffin (Grandview, Ohio) got the start and pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Flegal.
Capital visits Ohio Northern on Tuesday for another league doubleheader. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Ada, Ohio.
