The Capital University baseball team left eight men on base and surrendered runs in five different innings on its way to an 8-0 defeat at Huntingdon on the team's final day of competition in Montgomery, Ala.
The Crusaders (0-3 overall) posted six hits in the affair, but were unable to push a run across to show for it. Sophomore pitcher Robert Fravel (Port Clinton, Ohio) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Sophomore first baseman Matt Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.; above) led the offense with two hits. Junior centerfielder Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.) also reached twice, drawing a walk and recording a base hit.
After holding Capital scoreless despite a two-on, no-outs situation in the top of the first, the Hawks (6-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the frame and didn't look back. Huntingdon opened up the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman right-hander Jeff Small (Sylvania, Ohio) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Crusaders, striking out three and allowing nobody to reach base in his collegiate debut.
Capital resumes play on its spring break trip this Tuesday against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in Winter Haven, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
