TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team had momentum at numerous points during its match Tuesday night but was unable to sustain it in a 25-14, 25-18, 25-17 setback at Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal at Seiberling Gymnasium.
The No. 7 seed Crusaders conclude their 2013 season with a 15-15 overall record, finishing in seventh place in the OAC standings with a 3-6 league mark.
Heidelberg (17-14), the tournament's second seed and co-regular season league champion, moves on to face No. 3 seed Ohio Northern or No. 6 Baldwin Wallace in Friday's semifinals at Mount Union.
Five players finished with three or more kills to lead the Capital offense, including freshman outside hitter Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.), who paced the team with four. Freshman outside hitter Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio) finished with three kills, 13 digs and three blocks.
Freshman middle hitter Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) totaled three kills and a team-best four blocks. Junior libero Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 13 digs, and sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) registered 13 assists.
In the first set, the 'Berg jumped out to a 7-3 advantage and didn't look back. The Crusaders cut the deficit to three at 13-10 following back-to-back kills by McCracken, but Heidelberg extended its lead again. The 'Berg won the period going away, taking seven of the last eight points in the set, including the last five.
Capital nearly swung the momentum midway through the second set. After surrendering an early 6-3 lead and trailing midway through the frame, the Crusaders cut the deficit to 15-14 on the serve of sophomore defensive specialist Becca DeWitt (Springfield, Ohio). Heidelberg won six of the next eight points and regained control of the set and match, taking a two-set lead.
Capital jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third, but it was short lived as the 'Berg took an 11-10 advantage and didn't surrender the lead.
All 16 players on the current Capital roster have eligibility remaining and are slated to return in 2014.
