Women's Soccer Wins in Overtime, Ties for Lead Atop OAC

Box Score

COLUMBUS – The Capital University women's soccer team defeated Baldwin Wallace, 2-1, in an overtime thriller at Bernlohr Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Baldwin Wallace got on the board first in the 7th minute of play, scoring on a cross from the far side of the box followed by a shot to the lower left corner of the net.

"We went down on that goal, giving it up against the run against the flow of play," said head coach Chris Kouns. "But, we did a very good job of keeping the ball and implementing what we wanted to happen."

The remainder of the first half proved to be a bout of physical play from both sides, as both team's battled on every possession, leading to a 1-0 halftime lead for the Yellow Jackets.

"Yet again, we found ourselves down by a goal and continued to fight," Kouns said. "Once again, I was very pleased with our team's character and play."

As the second half began, the Crusaders quickly evened the score, in the 48th minute, with a goal from sophomore Jamie Murray, on an assist by sophomore Mariah Richards in which she dropped a short pass off for the score.

From that point forward, neither team managed to manufacture another goal in regulation, as the match was forced to an overtime period.

Just five minutes into overtime, freshman Becca Cartmill touched a short pass to Murray, who netted her second goal of the game, in the 95th minute, to seal the Crusaders victory, 2-1.

Leading the way for the Crusaders was Murray, scoring her seventh and eighth goals of the season, while Cartmill and Richards picked up their sixth and first assists of the season, respectively.

Senior goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan saved five of six shots on goal, en route to her 12th victory of the season.

"I was super pleased for Jamie (Murray), Becca (Cartmill) and Mariah (Richards)," Kouns said. "Once again, our young players stepped up again, along with Maggie (Donnellan) coming up huge on a key save, which is what you expect out of the OAC Goalkeeper of the Year."

With the victory, the Crusaders have moved into a tie for first place atop the Ohio Athletic Conference, with just two conference matches remaining.

"We were very pleased to get another conference win at home," Kouns said. "Especially when we're coming down the stretch here and trying to get one of the two byes in the OAC Tournament, this win was very important for us."

Next match for Capital (12-4-1, 5-2 OAC), is at Muskingum on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

"We're looking forward to competing against Muskingum," Kouns said. "Hopefully we are able to get one step closer to claiming a bye heading into the OAC Tournament."
