The Capital University men's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit midway through the second half to defeat Wilmington 82-64 in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest in Wilmington, Ohio.
Senior wing Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio; at right) eclipsed the 30-point mark for the second time this season with a game-high 31 points, including 20 in the second half, to go along with seven rebounds.
Trailing by eight points with 10:11 to play in the affair, the Crusaders (14-6 overall, 11-2 OAC) ran off 25 of the next 27 points to take a 68-53 advantage with just 3:03 on the clock. Sommer scored 14 straight points during that run, including three 3-pointers, a jumper and three free throws.
Capital held Wilmington (10-10, 7-5) to 40.6 percent shooting in the second half after the Quakers made 50 percent of their looks in the first period.
Junior forward Ben Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) and senior guard Tim Congrove (Circleville, Ohio) contributed with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Crusaders. Jackson added six rebounds and three blocks in his 23 minutes off the bench.
Capital scored the first points of the contest and led throughout most of the first half, taking a half-high six-point lead on four different occasions. The Crusaders led 33-30 heading into the locker room after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the frame.
In the second, Capital coupled its big run with a 17-for-19 (89.5 percent) performance at the free throw line. For the game, the Crusaders shot 51.9 percent from the floor and 75 percent (21-of-28) from the free throw line compared to 44.4 percent and 63.2 percent (12-of-19), respectively, for the Quakers.
With Wednesday's victory, Capital remains tied atop the OAC standings with rival Marietta. The Crusaders look to continue on the winning track this Saturday against John Carroll. Tip-off at the Capital Center is slated for 2 p.m.
During halftime of Saturday's contest, Capital's five Athletics Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized, along with two other honorees. This year's inductees include former men's basketball standouts Joe Jacubus '73 and Dave Cecutti '77, who also coached the Crusaders for three seasons (1986-89).
