The Capital University women's soccer had plenty of chances Friday, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunities in a 2-1 loss at Earlham in non-conference action at Richmond, Ind.
The Crusaders (0-1 overall), coming off of an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament second round appearance, outshot the Quakers 11-7 and held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
"It was a disappointing result considering we had seven corners to their one, 11 shots to their seven and missed three opportunities 1-on-1 with the goalie that should have been put away," Capital coach Chris Kouns said.
After Earlham (1-0) took a 1-0 advantage in the 49th minute, Capital responded in the 60th as junior Corey McClellan (Columbus, Ohio) sent the ball into the back of the net off a free kick from senior Alexa Bosanac (Strongsville, Ohio).
"(Corey and Alexa) set the pace for everybody in terms of defensive work rate and pressure they put on the ball," Kouns said. "They played at a speed we definitely want the team to mimic."
The Quakers took the lead for good just 30 seconds later and held on despite a strong Crusader attack.
Junior Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio), the reigning OAC Goalkeeper of the Year, tallied four saves.
According to Kouns, the Crusaders controlled the ball for a majority of the contest.
"We absolutely dominated possession," he said. "The team did really well for about a 20-minute period at the beginning of game, and another 20 minutes near the end, in terms of dominating opportunities and dominating possession.
"It definitely gave us something to look forward to, but I think the result came because we have to find an attacking identity after losing some key players to injury and graduation. We showed lots of promise, we are going to get back at it tomorrow and take it from there."
Capital returns to action tomorrow at Anderson. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. in Anderson, Ind.
