The Capital University women's soccer team was unable to find its rhythm Saturday, suffering a 1-0 setback at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at Berea, Ohio.
With the loss, the Crusaders (9-7-1 overall, 4-2-1 OAC) are now in a tie for second place with the Yellow Jackets in the conference standings with two regular season matches to play.
Capital didn't register a shot in the first half but held a 6-4 edge in the second. Baldwin Wallace (10-3-4, 4-2-1) tallied in the 63rd minute on a shot to the lower right corner and held on for the win. The Crusaders were whistled for 19 fouls compared to nine for the Yellow Jackets.
"Obviously, the result is disappointing," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "We were all disappointed that we weren't able to find a rhythm and play like we like to play. You have to give credit to BW's physical style, which we didn't handle very well. There were other
external factors that kept us from playing our game and making a real run at it."
Junior goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled three saves in 90 minutes. Freshmen Jamie Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio; at right) combined for all three of Capital's shots on goal. The Crusaders held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
"We had to really great opportunities, one on a shot by Jamie Murray where BW's keeper made a great save, and another on a corner kick that bounced around after we drove into the box," Kouns said. "We had some chances, but overall, on the road, in this conference, you have to be able to adapt, and unfortunately we just couldn't adapt to the things we were facing."
Capital plays its final home regular season match of the season this Wednesday against Muskingum. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
