The Capital University women's soccer team held an overwhelming advantage in every statistical category Saturday, tallying seven times in the first half en route to a 10-0 victory over Anderson in a non-conference affair in Anderson, Ind.
Freshman Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio) totaled seven points on two goals and three assists to lead the Crusaders, who outshot the Ravens (0-2) by a 40-0 count and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In total, nine different Crusaders scored goals and eight different players registered assists. Junior Katie Freshour (North Canton, Ohio; at left) recorded two assists to combine with Hoerauf for nearly half the team's total of 11.
"The game today was fairly useful in terms of allowing us an active opponent to work against as we establish an attacking personality for the team," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "Anderson played very hard and helped us improve our decision making, which was
something that we really needed."
After the game went scoreless through 18 minutes, freshman Rachael Wintering (Lewis Center, Ohio) opened the scoring for Capital in the 19th off an assist from classmate Maura Fortino (Philadelphia, Pa.).
The Crusaders posted six more goals in the next 23 minutes, receiving contributions from junior Corey McClellan (Columbus, Ohio; at right), Hoerauf, freshman Jamie Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla.), freshman Allison Mervau (Micanopy, Fla.), junior Madison Palmer (Spring Arbor, Mich.) and freshman Megan Tolnar (New Albany, Ohio).
In the second half, Capital struck three times in a four-minute span as Hoerauf, senior Natalie Fiorelli (Pickerington, Ohio) and junior Livvy Hein (Columbus, Ohio) found the back of the net.
"We found several different attacking combinations and players who brought an immediate presence to the field when they stepped on," Kouns said. "As we move toward the Ohio Athletic Conference season, we will find our strength comes from multiple scoring threats."
While there were numerous contributors, Kouns pointed to the strong performances of Hein, Hoerauf, Freshour, Fortino, Wintering, junior Holly Phillips (Bellbrook, Ohio) and sophomore Jessica Cermelj (Westerville, Ohio).
Junior goalkeeper Melanie Graeff (Bellbrook, Ohio) recorded a shutout, playing all 90 minutes of the contest.
Following the tournament, Hoerauf, Hein and McClellan were named to the El Rodeo Raven-Quaker Classic All-Tournament team.
The Crusaders open their 2012 home schedule Monday at 4 p.m. against 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifier Thomas More (Ky.). Capital, which will play its third match in four days, was undefeated (7-0-2) at Bernlohr Stadium a year ago and hasn't lost at home since Oct. 9, 2010.
