The Capital University men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half Saturday to knock off 2011 NCAA qualifier Baldwin Wallace 3-2 in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown in Berea, Ohio.
Sophomore Bobby Atkin (LaGrange, Ky.) tallied the game-winning goal, his first of the season, for the Crusaders (8-5-3 overall, 3-3-1 OAC) in the 82nd minute to complete the team's comeback from a 2-0 deficit. Junior Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio; at left) posted his second assist of the year on the play.
"I had just put Bobby and Tim in the game, and told them to create dangerous situations and to attack the back line," Capital coach Alan Yost said. "It was a great goal."
Sophomore R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio) recorded goals in the 56th and 64th minutes. His first came off an assist from senior Al Argyris (Centerville, Ohio), and the second, which tied the contest at 2-2, was on a penalty kick.
With the win, the Crusaders remain in fifth place in the conference standings with just two regular season matches left. Capital can clinch a bid to the OAC Tournament with a victory in its next game.
"That was one of the best wins I've ever been a part of as a player or coach," Yost said. "Every single player on our team did exactly what was asked of him. I'm so proud of the guys for the way they handled adversity … that's what it's all about as a coach."
The Yellow Jackets (6-6-3, 1-4-2) found the back of the net twice, including a penalty kick, to take a two-goal advantage just under 50 minutes into the affair.
"In the first half, we didn't have enough pace," Yost said. "I think the guys came out a little bit timid because we always struggle playing there. I told them at half time to force Baldwin Wallace to play."
Junior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves to pick up his sixth victory of the campaign.
Capital closes out its 2012 home schedule this Tuesday against Muskingum. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium. Prior to the contest, Argyris, along with fellow seniors Casey Blankenship (Galloway, Ohio) and Tyler Fountain (Upper Arlington, Ohio), will be recognized in their final home match.
