ASHLAND, Ohio – The Capital University track and field team went to the Ashland Invitational on Saturday, January 24th where the program put forth some stellar performances in several key areas, highlighted by two new school records being set in the men's 5,000-meter run and the men's one mile run.
Setting new records for the Comets were
Mikey Arnone in the men's 5K and
Kolin Brake in the men's one mile. The previous record in the one mile race had stood for 55 years previously, while the 5K record was just over two years old.
Below is a summary of all the day's highlights.
MEN
60-meter dash:
Cheik Souare topped the three Comets in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.16 to place 10th overall.
Mershaud Parker was 12th with a time of 7.17 seconds, while
Leighton Kordack placed 23rd in 7.30 seconds.
200-meter dash:
Cheik Souare was the top finisher for Capital with a time of 22.63 seconds and eight overall in the event.
Demetre Wheeler was next, finishing 11th in 22.74 seconds. The time jumps him up to eighth best in Capital history.
Mershaud Parker finished 13th with a time of 22.76 seconds. His time was good enough to tie for ninth best in Cap history.
Leighton Kordack placed 32nd in 23.42 seconds, while
Trevor Estep was 63rd in 25.50 seconds.
400-meter dash:
Neko Henry placed ninth overall in a time of 50.67 seconds. His time was good to move into fifth all-time at Capital.
Demetre Wheeler placed 27th with a time of 53.19 seconds, followed by
Trevor Estep who clocked in at 59.18 seconds.
800-meter run:
Henry Taylor placed 39th in a time of 2:09.74.
One Mile Run:
Kolin Brake won the event with a new school record time of 4:18.00. The time beat out Dave Lewis's prior record of 4:21.94. Lewis' mark had stood strong since the 1971 season, marking a run of 55 years atop the record books in the one mile. This is Brake's second school record (1K) that he has broken in which the previous record stood for 55 or more years.
3,000-meter run:
Justin Rona placed 17th overall in a time of 8:53.87. The time was good to move him into third all-time at Capital in the event.
Ridwan Aliawl was next for Capital, placing 31st in 9:14.67. His time moves him into 10th all-time in the event at Capital.
Dimetrius Floyd was next for Cap, placing 36th in 9:28.72.
5,000-meter run:
Mikey Arnone put forth a school record setting time of 15:32.86 to win the 5K race. His time was good enough to surpass Donovan Slattery's previous record of 15:33.88, set in January of 2024.
Zach Glotzbecker was second to finish in the race, running a new PR time of 15:46.19. His time was good to hold him third all-time at Capital.
Aiden Mahony was next to finish for Capital, placing sixth in a time of 16:04.07. That time was good for fifth all-time in Cap history.
Aaron McNutt (17:06.96) and
Jordan Hull (17:30.40) rounded it out for the Comets in the 5K.
4x400-meter relay: The quartet of
Neko Henry,
Demetre Wheeler,
Kolin Brake and
Mershaud Parker ran a time of 3:28.71 to place ninth in the event. The time was good enough to set the relay team ninth all-time in Capital history.
Weight Throw:
Nolan Piper placed seventh overall with a mark of 16.93 meters which is a personal best, and improves his own standing in second all-time at Capital. The mark was an improvement of 0.59 meters over his previous best of 16.34 meters.
William Dodd Jr. placed 23rd with a mark of 13.42 meters.
Shot Put:
Nolan Piper topped the trio with a heave of 13.55 meters.
Waylon Yeager was next with a best mark of 13.44 meters.
WOMEN
60-meter dash:
Kaylee Jackson was the top-finishing Comet after running a 8.13 second race. She placed 19th overall.
Jaleea Harvey ran a time of 8.18 seconds to finish 23rd.
Maria Da Cunha placed 33rd in 8.37 seconds.
200-meter dash:
Kaylee Jackson placed fourth overall in a time of 25.65 seconds. The time was just .02 seconds off her previous best in the event, and is just .06 seconds off the school record.
Isabella Johnson placed 22nd with a time of 27.24 seconds, while
Jaleea Harvey was 23rd in a time of 27.27 seconds.
400-meter dash:
Maria Da Cunha raced a time of 59.77 seconds to place seventh in the event. The time marked the first time in her career in which she had broken a minute in the event, solidifying her own hold on fourth all-time at Capital.
800-meter run:
Shelby Janes led the Comet women in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.04, a mark good enough to set her 10th all-time in program history.
Chloe Zarlino was next for Capital with a time of 2:52.95.
5,000-meter run:
Laney Tarr clocked in a time of 19:03.09 on the 5K circuit. The time was good for fourth best in today's race and also marked her fifth all-time in Capital history.
4x400-meter relay: The quartet of
Maria Da Cunha,
Kaylee Jackson,
Shelby Janes, and
Isabella Johnson ran a time of 4:06.49 in the 4x400-meter relay, marking the third best time in program history.
High Jump:
Brooklyn Herbert finished 12th in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.52 meters. The height was good enough to move her into a tie for seventh best in school history.
Pole Vault:
Claire Robinson and
Alex Wilkinson tied for sixth in the event as they both cleared 3.18 meters.
Weight Throw:
Mia Sanchez placed 21st with a mark of 11.72 meters, followed by
Lillian Baker who finished 33rd with a mark of 9.75 meters.
