Golf Falls in Battle for the Oar Match Play

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio – The Capital University golf teams took on rival Otterbein for round two of their Battle for the Oar match play on Thursday, unfortunately falling short of the oar, 4-18 overall on the men's side and 1-9 overall on the women's side.

MEN | R1: 1-9 | R2: 3-9 | OVR: 4-18
After falling behind 1-9 in round one in the fall, the Comets came in with some serious ground to cover. CU would come close to tying the match overall had individual matches tilted slightly in the way of the Purple and White, but in the end Cap would only put together three points on the day, bringing the final standings to 18-4 in favor of Otterbein.

The highlights of the day for Capital came with wins in both the nine-hole matches by Andrew Arway and Andreas Reider. Arway would take his match up three with one to go, closing it out with a win on the eighth hole. Likewise, Reider would finish with the win as he was one up when the match was called.

A couple of Comets would settle for ties in the 18-hole matches as Keegan Billingham and Cole Crandall remained all square with their opponents after 18, both earning half a point. The eight remaining 18-hole matches would go in the way of the Cardinals. Aidan Isaac would take it the whole way but was unable to tie it up on the 18th, ending one down. Brodey Dewitt and Logan Wycoff both took it to 17 holes, ending down two with one to go. Cam Donahue, Ryan Murphy, and Adam Murphy would all fall four down with three to play. Ricky Walsh made it one hole further, but lost the 16th to drop four down with two to play. Finally, Nolan Frey lost down seven with five to play after dropping the 13th hole.

WOMEN | R1: 1-5 | R2: 0-4 | OVR: 1-9
The women's side would have to wait months to get a result from round one as Camryn Mauter finally finished her match from the fall, ultimately winning up two with one to play. This put the Purple and White at 1-5 entering round two. Unfortunately, the spring session would end with CU suffering a sweep, 0-4, making the overall match a final of 9-1 in favor of Otterbein.

Mauter took her round two match the whole way but was unable to tie it up on the 18th, losing down one. Emma Konopa finished 16 holes, ending down three with two to play. Reese King conceded the 13th hole to fall seven down with five to play. Finally, Hannah Combs suffered a loss after 10 holes, ending nine down with eight to play.

COMMENTS FROM COACH GARCIA
"Wasn't our year in match play. Obviously we hate losing but we learned a lot from our experience and we will work hard over the Easter break to rectify our mistakes – myself included – and grow from it. Turning our attention towards postseason play now and getting ready over the next few weeks for a deep run at this thing."

UP NEXT
Both sets of Comets will compete in the Otterbein Spring Invitational on Monday at Northstar Golf Club.
