Men’s Lax Gets First Win with Defensive Stand against Sewanee, 5-4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Capital University men's lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0 OAC) played their second of two games in the Music City Classic on Sunday, going up against hosts Sewanee (2-1, 0-0 SAA). Despite facing over twice as many shots as they took, the Comets defense would stand strong, leading to a low scoring 5-4 win – the first with Adam Stewart leading the Purple and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides stood at a standstill for nearly seven minutes to start the game. It wasn't until the 8:15-mark that Capital finally broke the ice, thanks to Mason Spaulding. Sewanee would draw even shortly after, making it 1-1 for the quarter. That's how it would stay until just over four minutes into the second quarter when the Comets struck again. This time it was Colton Woods with the score, assisted by Spaulding. The Tigers tied it back up at 2-2 a few minutes later, but it wouldn't be long until Cap got back on top thanks to Max Schillig with an assist by Spaulding, making it 3-2 heading into the half.

Both sides struggled to find the back of the cage in the third quarter. In fact, the score would've stayed at 3-2 if it wasn't for Spaulding striking the cord for CU with just 41 seconds left, making it a 4-2 ballgame going into the final 15 minutes. Unfortunately Sewanee would slowly get themselves back into the game, scoring two-straight to tie it at 4-4. Spaulding once again came to the rescue with about five minutes remaining, scoring unassisted to put Cap back ahead 5-4. At that point it became desperation time for the Tigers. However, the Comets defense, led by graduate goalie Tyler Carney, stood strong, denying many opportunities to equalize and ending the game at 5-4.

THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding had a hand in all five goals for the Comets, scoring three and assisting on the other two, while also grabbing two ground balls.

Max Schillig and Colton Woods were responsible for the remaining two goals with Schillig getting a ground ball as well.

Freddy Noday had another near-perfect day on the faceoff, going 8-for-11 with four ground balls. He was joined on the spot by Tyler Lieu who went 2-for-2 with one GB.

Defensively, Capital was led by Gino Nave (2 CT, 3 GB), Eric Patterson (1 CT, 2 GB), Mason Patrick (1 CT, 1 GB), and Dylan Christopherson (1 CT, 1 GB). Charlie Howenstine and Noah Musick also collected two ground balls each.

Tyler Carney (1-1) spent the full 60 minutes in the cage for Cap, making 14 saves with three ground balls, and recording his first win for the Purple and White.

UP NEXT
The Comets will open up their home schedule on Sunday, February 23rd against Rhodes at Bernlohr Stadium. That game is set to get underway around 12:00 p.m., immediately following the women's home-opener against Berry at 10:00 a.m.
