COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-0 OAC) opened up their home schedule against Rhodes (3-2, 0-0 SAA) on Sunday afternoon at Bernlohr Stadium. Despite, their best efforts, the Comets would fall in a close one, 10-8.
The two sides would start off by trading scores in the first quarter with Rhodes striking first followed by Capital. This kept up until it was 3-3 at the end of the first 15 minutes. For the Comets it was
Charlie Howenstine,
Landon Weihl, and
Colton Woods entering their names on the scoresheet, with Howenstine picking up an assist as well. Cap finally pulled ahead at the start of the second quarter as
Jacob Poole and Mason Spauling struck the net back-to-back. However, this slim two-goal lead was short-lived as the Lynx scored to of their own to break even before the half, 5-5.
The tide swung even further in Rhodes' direction in the fourth as the Comets were on the scoreless end of a 2-0 frame. This would end up making the difference in the game and the two sides once again went goal-for-goal in the fourth quarter, with each side scoring three. Spaulding,
Ty Chase, and
Elliott Rhoton were responsible for CU's scores, with Chase and Spaulding each picking up one assist as the game ended, 10-8.
THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding scored twice and added an assist for three points, finishing with two caused turnovers and one ground ball as well.
Ty Chase,
Colton Woods, and
Charlie Howenstine all had one goal and one assist for two points. Howenstine secured two ground balls and one caused turnover with Woods getting a GB also.
Jacob Poole,
Elliott Rhoton, and
Landon Weihl each scored once and picked up one ground ball apiece.
On the faceoff,
Freddy Noday went 10-of-17 with four ground balls, joined by
Tyler Lieu going 3-for-4 with one ground ball.
The defensive efforts were spearheaded by
Leelan Durham (2 CT, 1 GB),
Gino Nave (3 GB, 1 CT), and
Eric Patterson (1 CT, 1 GB), joined by
Jordan Marty,
Dylan Christopherson,
Mason Patrick,
Ian Zaletel, and Max Shillig each with one ground ball.
Tyler Carney (1-2) and
Luc Kadlic split time in the cage. Carney made the start and played the majority of the game with 12 saves in the losing decision. Kadlic came in for the final seconds.
