WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Athletic Conference announced the 2023 All-Conference softball selections on Tuesday morning and chosen to represent Capital University were
Lexie Leggett,
Brianna Shearer and
Kyleigh Kirby. Leggett was chosen to the first team, while both Shearer and Kirby were honorable mention selections.
The three selections for Capital mark the first time that the program has had three or more winners since 2017. Shearer's award is her second from the conference while both Leggett and Kirby are first time honorees.
Leggett had a stellar senior year hitting a .464 average on 45 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, and an OAC-leading 13 home runs. She accounted for 28 RBIs as well. Leggett's slugging percentage of 1.010 led all of NCAA Division III, while her home runs per game average of 0.42 placed her second best in the country. Additionally, Leggett was named the NFCA Player of the Week and the OAC Player of the Week once this season.
Shearer – who was a first team honoree in 2021 – put together a strong senior campaign, finishing the season with an 8-8 record in 22 appearances. In her 110.1 innings pitched, Shearer finished with an ERA of 2.92 and recorded one save and punched out 86 opposing batters. Shearer was the pitcher of record in wins over three of the four teams in the OAC tournament this season.
Kirby put together a very strong freshman season, hitting a .370 average on 40 hits, six doubles, two triples and eight home runs to result in 27 RBIs. Kirby's eight home runs finished in the top-five of the conference this season. Kirby's highlight game of the season came in a 3-for-3 showing vs. Olivet where she hit a triple and a grand slam for six RBIs in a run-rule victory.
The Comets softball program finished a much improved 15-17 this season, including a 7-11 mark in the conference.
