NORTON, Ohio – The Capital University cross country program ventured up to Norton, Ohio this weekend for the Great Lakes Regional Championships with an eye to shave loads of time. With the course at Silver Lake Metro Park running relatively flat or downhill, the Comets were able to accomplish their goals of dropping time.
The highlight of the day was certainly senior
Donovan Slattery shattering the previous men's 8K school record that had stood for 48 years – a record set in 1975 by Aaron Folsom.
In addition to Slattery's chart topping run,
Joseph Countryman and
Zach Glotzbecker also added their names to the program top-20 list with their times.
On the women's side,
Paige Castello improved her standing on the top-20 list, while
Elizabeth Mak and
Catherine Schaub joined the top-20 board.
MEN
Donovan Slattery blew past the previous school record, running a time of 24:48.8. The prior record set by Aaron Folsom of 25:02 had stood since 1975. Slattery finished 38th overall in the race, placing just three spots outside of All-Region placement. The time for Slattery was a 26 second improvement on his previous best of 25:14.
Joseph Countryman was the next to finish for Capital, running a time of 26:42.6. The time was good enough to place him 13th on the program top-20 list.
Zach Glotzbecker was just 10 seconds back from Countryman, running his race in 26:52.0. After a long time coming, Glotzbecker also added his name to the program's top-20 list, now sitting 16th overall.
Kolin Brake crossed the line in a time of 27:41.4. His time was a 36-second personal best for the freshman.
Aaron McNutt finished the course in 28:09.8, followed closely by
Nick Stuck who ran a time of 28:25.1. McNutt's time was an improvement of more than one minute on his previous best time, while Stuck also dropped 50 seconds off of his prior best time.
Mikey Arnone rounded it out for the men with a time of 30:31.3.
WOMEN
Paige Castello led the Comets with a time of 23:21.2. Castello improved her prior best time by 11 seconds, jumping up to sixth all-time in program history.

Also running a strong race were
Olivia Ellis who finished in a time of 25:29.1 and

UP NEXT
While most of the team will now turn their attention to the indoor track season which begins in early December,
Donovan Slattery will await tomorrow's official announcement from the NCAA to see if his time was good enough to qualify for the National Championships as an individual.
