COLUMBUS, Ohio – Highlighted by a new school record in the women's weight throw by
Alexa Poling, the Capital University track and field program once again put forth a much improved slate of competition on Saturday afternoon as they hosted their third event of the year at The Capital Center.
Behind Poling's new school record, Capital also set or improved five all-time marks on the program leader boards.
MEN
Pole Vault:
Zion Park and
Wesley Triplett went 1-2 in the pole vault, with Park taking first and Triplett finishing second. Park's best vault was 4.40m and Triplett's best attempt was 3.85m.
Long Jump:
Daniel McCormack won the event with his furthest jump marking 6.55m, just .05 meters off his indoor best.
Andy Fullmer also had a nice leap, going 6.22m for fourth place overall.
High Jump: Fullmer placed third overall of nine competitors with a high jump of 1.81m.
60m Dash:
Ishmael Young qualified for the finals with a new PR of 7.12 seconds. In the finals, Ish took first overall with an even better PR of 7.08 seconds. The time was good enough to help him leapfrog teammate
Daniel Hiser into third all-time in the event. Others to compete in the prelims were
Xavier Jennings (7.41),
Dylan Dowell (7.41),
Kelly Wilson II (7.51) and
Dom Glenn (7.58).
800m Run:
Donovan Slattery ran a time of 2:03.93 which marked a new indoor PR and moved him to 8th all-time on the indoor track in program history. Slattery is now 8th or better on the all-time list in Capital history in events 800m or longer. Also competing for Capital were
Nick Stuck and
Zach Glotzbecker. Stuck ran a new PR by five seconds, finishing his race in 2:07.98. Glotzbecker finished his run in a time of 2:14.41.
4x200m Relay:
Daniel McCormack,
Dom Glenn,
Kaden Lowe and
Ishmael Young teamed up to win the event in a time of 1:32.14 – less than a second off the program top-10 list.
One Mile:
Zach Glotzbecker ran a time of 4:53.49 in the mile, just about a second off of his PR.
4x400m Relay: The grouping of
Ishmael Young,
Kaden Lowe,
Donovan Slattery and
Daniel McCormack won in a time of 3:32.87.
Weight Throw:
Toren Smith placed second with a toss of 11.29m, followed in order by
Jesse Foster (10.80m) and Jon Kirk (10.44m).
Shot Put: The four competing Comets finished in order, with Jon Kirk taking third (12.41m),
Marvin Jean-Denis finishing fourth (12.27m),
Toren Smith placing fifth (11.23m) and
Jesse Foster finishing sixth (11.20m).
WOMEN
Weight Throw:
Alexa Poling won the event in a school record fashion by throwing the weight 15.80m, nearly a whole .30 meters further than the previous record of 15.53m set by Kassie Lee in 2020. She was followed up by
Lily Purdon in third place with a toss of 12.06m.
Grace Heckenlively was next in fourth place with a throw of 11.28m. Deivon McCullough rounded it out with a toss of 8.29m.
Shot Put:
Grace Heckenlively placed second overall with her furthest throw landing at 11.56m. The throw moves her into a tie for the 10th best shot put throw in program history. Heckenlively is now level with Amanda Patrick who also tossed the mark in 2005. Poling was not far back, finishing third overall with a toss of 11.27m.
Lily Purdon placed sixth overall at 10.59m. Deivon McCullough was 12th with a toss of 8.52m.
60m Dash: All four Comets in the 60m dash advanced to the finals. In the finals,
Larissa Agbor-Nkongho and
Cece Samuels placed second and third overall with new personal bests. Agbor-Nkongho clocked a time of 8.01 seconds which moves her from sixth to fourth on the all-time list at Capital, while Samuels clocked in at 8.02 seconds, good enough to keep them fifth all-time, but a new PR by .09 seconds.
Hanna Bauer placed sixth with a time of 8.41 seconds and
Erniesha Guerrier was eighth with a time of 8.55m.
High Jump:
Kennedi Hendricks won the event with a jump of 1.44m – just .01m off her PR of 1.45m.
Long Jump:
Claire Larger placed sixth overall with a jump of 4.71m and
Olivia Humes placed 10th with a leap of 4.30m.
4x200m Relay: The Comet quartet of
Maria Da Cunha,
Cece Samuels, Erniehsa Guerrier and
Larissa Agbor-Nkongho won the event with a time of 1:48.58. The time is just over one second off the program top-10 list in the event.
200m Dash:
Hanna Bauer finished fourth overall with a time of 27.88 seconds. The time was the first time Bauer clocked in under 28 seconds in the event.
One Mile:
Elizabeth Mak put forth a new personal best in the mile with a time of 5:50.52. The time placed her fourth overall.
800m Run: Mak followed up her narrow PR in the mile with another PR in the 800m run with a time of 2:44.08. The time placed her fifth overall in the event.
60m Hurdles:
Maria Da Cunha placed second with a time of 10.35 seconds. The time was a new PR for Da Cunha by .16 seconds.
Pole Vault:
Bella McCarty placed third with her best vault registering 2.90m.
Triple Jump:
Claire Larger placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 9.42m.
4x400m Relay: The Capital foursome of
Larissa Agbor-Nkongho,
Cece Samuels,
Claire Larger, and
Erniesha Guerrier won the event with a time of 4:22.03.
UP NEXT
The Comets will stay in state next Friday and Saturday, February 3rd and 4th as they travel to the Ashland University Lightgiver Invitational. Originally, the team was meant to travel to the VMI Relay event in Virginia, but the hosts over-booked the event, thus forcing Capital to alter their plans and head to Ashland.
