Track and Field to Pick Back Up in New Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University Track & Field team is looking to hit the track with a lot to prove during the 2022 indoor season. Under the direction of a new coaching staff, the team is aiming to set new strides and standards not yet seen. After a promising First Glimpse Meet in early December, the team may already be finding those strides and standards.

The team returns several faces on both the men's and women's side that have already cemented their name among some of the best in the program's history. For the men, Capital will return five members of the Indoor Top-10 lists – Daniel Hiser, Zion Park, Jonathan Brown, Kelly Wilson II  and Andy Fullmer. Both Wilson II and Fullmer hold top marks in their respective events – the 60 meter hurdles for Wilson and the heptathlon for Fullmer. On the women's side, Allison Costanzo, Bella McCarthy, and Alexa Poling find their names on the indoor Top-10 lists as well.

Coach Pham will be encouraged by those returners to lead the way in training to help move the group forward. As a whole, Capital is welcoming a host of 16 new or refreshed faces to the team this year. These new names will certainly be relied upon heavily to contribute scoring marks in meets this season.

Already this season, Capital got off the blocks at the Marietta First Glimpse meet in early December. At that meet, Capital had several high marks set for a season-opening meet. Notably, Andy Fullmer broke the school record with a first place finish in the heptathlon (4,136 points). On the women's side, Alexa Poling had the team's highest finish with a second place mark in the weight throw (14 meters).

Others putting forth solid performances at the meet included Ethan Barton, Kelly Wilson II, Jonathan Brown, Daniel Hiser, Brandon Rex, Daniel McCormack, Kaya Milby, Hanna Bauer, Olivia Humes, and Larissa Agbor-Nkongho

Looking ahead to the spring semester competition season, Capital will face a heavy load of competition with meets running nearly every weekend from January 15th until the team learns if they will qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 12th.
Getting things started, Capital will make the short trip up to Otterbein this coming weekend on the 15th for the Snowglobe Open, where a full squad is expected to compete.

From there, Cap will make the two hour trip to Tiffin University for the Revolution College Open on January 22nd. The Comets will return to Northwest Ohio the next weekend for the Alumni Classic and Elite Throws meet hosted by Findlay.

Cap will then take a weekend off before making consecutive trips to repeat locations. First on February 12th, Capital will compete at Otterbein in the All-Ohio Championships. Then the Purple and White will return to Findlay for the Oiler Invite on February 18th.

All these meets will set the stage for the OAC Championships on February 25th and 26th at the University of Mount Union. After the conference meet, Cap will have one last chance to qualify for the big meet at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Final Qualifier on March 4th.

After the Final Qualifier, Capital will know if the team or individuals will be making the trip to the coveted National Championships in Winston Salem, North Carolina on March 11th and 12th.

All-in-all, the season looks promising for the contingent of Comets competing on the track for Capital this indoor season preparing for a prosperous outdoor campaign.
