GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon, Capital University senior thrower
Josh Miller competed at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the men's shot put. There, Miller placed fourth with a new school record heave of 17.42 meters, earning him All-American honors.
Miller, already a 2020 indoor All-American, added his first career outdoor All-American accolade to his lengthy list of honors with a great day of competition. Entering the event, Miller was seeded fifth with a best throw of 17.22 meters -- a school record set earlier this spring.
During competition, Miller started with a first throw of 15.53 meters before a weather delay disrupted the event. Out of the delay, Miller started progressively improving his best mark with each throw. On his fifth attempt, Miller hit a mark of 17.37 meters, beating his own school record of 17.22. Not satisfied, Miller went for more on his sixth and final attempt and registered a throw of 17.42 meters, furthering his school record mark.
The throw was good enough to place him fourth overall in a very competitive field of shot put throwers.
Wisconsin-Stout's Kevin Ruechel won the event with a top throw of 18.21 meters.
With his performance at Nationals, Miller concluded a Capital career that featured two All-American awards, three school records, multiple indoor and outdoor OAC titles, and several regional accolades to his name.
