Men's Lacrosse Home
BEXLEY, Ohio – On a cool, rainy spring Saturday, the Capital University men's lacrosse team gave the OAC-leading Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets all they could handle en route to a narrow 15-13 loss.
The loss bumped Capital back to 6-5 on the year and elevated BW to 11-1.
Offensively in the game, the Crusaders were led by a four-goal outing from Brendan Pelton.
Jake Belt contributed a hat-trick and
Evan Frund,
Jack Scharner, and
Nathan Mork all chipped in with two goals each. Scharner facilitated matters by leading the team with five assists.
Defensively,
Doc Crimmel caused two turnovers and picked up six ground balls to lead the team.
The first half proved to be a back-and-forth affair as both Capital and Baldwin Wallace spent time ahead on the scoresheet. After a somewhat chaotic first four minutes of figuring out the game, BW finally broke the deadlock on a goal from Trevor Stevens.
The Crusaders didn't trail for long as
Evan Frund equalized on a spinning shot just three minutes later.
Will Freiburger dished a pass to Frund who received it and twirled a shot toward goal in one motion to level things early. Shortly after,
Jake Belt scored an unassisted goal to give Capital their first lead of the game.
The Yellow Jackets responded with the game's next three goals and took a 4-2 lead into the first quarter break.
Capital stormed back in the second quarter -- one in which there were a combined nine goals scored. After Stevens added another goal for BW, Capital scored three straight goals on strikes from
Jack Scharner,
Brenden Pelton, and
Jake Belt to restore order at 5-5.
Both teams then exchanged two goals each, before BW's Jimmy Brown scored to give the visitors a slight 8-7 halftime edge.
The third quarter was packed full of entertaining lacrosse as both teams got after it. The Crusaders jumped ahead briefly with three goals in the first six minutes of the frame. Scharner, Frund, and Belt all scored, pushing Cap ahead 10-9. The lead would be the Crusaders last unfortunately as BW scored six more goals throughout the remaining game time.
Nathan Mork scored two goals and Pelton added another, but the scoring for Capital proved to be just too-little-too-late in the end.
The Yellow Jackets held just a slight advantage on the overall shot chart with 50 attempts to Capital's 42.
Ben Houser stopped 15 shots that found the target throughout the game.
The battle on the ground was fairly even throughout as Cap picked up 14, compared to BW's 12. The Crusaders used the penalty game to their advantage as well throughout the game as they scored a man-up goal in both the second and fourth periods and a man-down goal in the third period.
Prior to the game, Capital Athletics and the men's lacrosse program honored nine seniors for their contributions to the program over the years.
Luke McClellan, Brenan Pontiere,
Hunter Knipp,
Trent Thomas, Nick Weryha,
Doc Crimmel,
Alex Keckler,
Ben Houser and
CJ Hughes were all honored in pregame.
Capital will return to the field with a make-up game at home on Tuesday, April 27th. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. as Wilmington College travels to Bernlohr Stadium.
