COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team fell to 1-3 on the season following a 65-60 defeat at the hands of Heidelberg on Saturday night in The Capital Center. The contest was close from the start as each team traded the lead before the Student Princes eventually came away with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early turnovers by Heidelberg allowed the Crusaders to begin to amass a six-point lead after two Joe Hartmann free throws at the 14:53 mark, making the score 9-3.
  • The lead would then balloon to nine with 9:55 to go after freshman Carter Combs scored the first of his 16-points on the night with a three-pointer.
  • Shortly after though, Heidelberg scored nine-straight points to knot the game back up at 14-all.
  • Each side battled in the closing minutes of the half, keeping in step with one another until Capital managed late buckets by senior Cameron Caldwell and sophomore Trey Meister to give them the 24-22 advantage at the halfway mark.
  • Out of the break, the Crusaders continued to push the pace and another Caldwell three-pointer put the Purple and White on top by eight at 33-25.
  • The lead would start to dwindle as the Student Princes offense started to get in sync, tying the game up at 36 with two free throws and taking the lead with a three-point shot at the 12:16 mark.
  • The ensuing minutes saw both sides evenly matched with Heidelberg holding a slim one-point advantage with six minutes to play.
  • From that point forward, the Crusaders were unable to hang on, chipping away at the mounting deficit but ultimately unable to close out the game.

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Carter Combs led the team with 16-points for the game in his first career start. The freshman has now scored 11-plus points in each of his last three games.
  • Sophomore Griffin Doseck reeled in a career-high 12 rebounds, five of which were offensive, and scored eight points.
  • Junior Tyler Schreck also pulled down double-digit rebounds with 10 to go along with five points.
  • Other than Combs, both Caldwell and Hartmann reached double figures in the points column, each contributing 10.
