COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Men's Basketball made a mission to defend its home court in 2021 and on Friday night earned its first home victory of season, defeating Wilmington College at The Capital Center, 76-68. Four Crusaders scored 10 or more points to lead the team in its best offensive output of the young season.

SEPARATION IN SHORT BURSTS
  • Capital and Wilmington ended the first half separated by just one point with the Quakers holding a slim 33-23 lead.
  • CU started the second half on a 9-0 run with buckets coming from Griffin Doseck, Cameron Caldwell and Carter Combs. Combs' triple put Capital up 39-33 just 1:30 into the second frame and then followed that with a layup to put CU up eight.
  • Wilmington erased the lead with a run of its own and retook the lead for a short time following Bilal Sow's 3-pointer from the far wing. Caldwell and Combs answered with 3s in back-to-back possessions to regain a four-point edge, 50-46.
  • While the defense kept the Quakers off the board for nearly three minutes, Capital went on its second burst of offense that created the separation needed to guide it the rest of the way. Reed Bradfield dumped in four unanswered points. Joe Thompson then cashed in a triple following a Bradfield block. In the blink of an eye, Capital took its largest lead (11) with 7:24 to go.
KEEPING THEM IN CHECK
  • The defensive stand put forth by the Crusaders in the second half that allowed them to build a double-digit lead was critical toward the win. Wilmington was stuck on 50 points for a total of 2:55 until Jeffrey Mansfield broke the run with a 3-pointer. In between those two made shots, Wilmington went 0-for-4 from the field with Capital also making one block.
  • Jeffrey Mansfield's quiet first half was also significant toward the result. Mansfield, who entered the game as the Quakers' leading scorer behind 19.3 points per game, was held to just six points and five shot attempts in the first half.
  • After shooting 53.6 percent in the first half, Capital did its part to lower the Quakers' shooting efficiency. Wilmington shot just 42.4 percent from the field in the second.
  • As a part of Capital's first-half defensive effort, the Crusaders limited WC to 28 shot attempts compared to its 34. This was in part due to seven forced turnovers and also holding a 7-1 advantage on the offensive boards, which fed into a plus-seven overall rebounding edge.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Four Capital players scored 10 or more points in the win. Freshman Carter Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) led all CU scorers with 15 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc.
  • Joining Combs in double figures was sophomore Griffin Doseck (Anna, Ohio/Anna), senior Cameron Caldwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) and senior Reed Bradfield (Edgewood, Ohio/Dixie Heights) who had 12 points, each.
  • Bradfield also posted three blocks and three rebounds in his 22 minutes off of the bench.
  • Sophomore Joe Thompson (West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) played 10 minutes and scored five points, both career-highs. He was also on the floor during much of Wilmington's second half scoreless streak.
NEXT UP
Capital (2-3) will now head to Wilmington for a Saturday evening game in an attempt to complete the sweep of the Quakers (1-4). The Crusaders and Quakers will take the floor at Fred Raizk Arena at 6 p.m.
