Women's Lacrosse Locks Up Postseason Bid with Victory Over Rivals

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Postseason spot, check. Home field advantage, check. Double digit win total, check. Win on Senior Day over rival Otterbein University, check. The Capital University women's lacrosse team marked all of those tasks as completed when they defeated the Cardinals, 11-6, at Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday night.

Senior Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) got her Senior Day started with a bang, scoring each of Capital's first two goals against the Cardinals. She and sophomore Victoria Husain (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) connected on both occasions within the first five minutes of the contest.

Junior Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) took the first step toward achieving a career milestone when she scored her first of two goals in the game. Her first came 8:26 into the game to extend Capital's lead to 3-1, but her next goal scored late in the second half marked her 100th career goal, which comes in her 43rd game played.

Both teams put on a defensive display and equaled one another at four goals each heading into the half. Capital made a defensive change in goal with 7:39 remaining in the first half. Despite one early save right out of the gate by freshman Lisa Lotz, Otterbein scored twice in the final five minutes to tie the game. Capital returned junior Maddie Wilson to the cage at the start of the second half, where she earned the decision while making six saves on 10 shots against.

Sophomore Taylor Thomas (Massillon, Ohio) opened up the game for Capital at the start of the second with three consecutive goals, all within two minutes of one another. Husain tallied two assists among that trio of goals, the final of which came on a man-up chance following a yellow card being administered to Otterbein. She ended up leading both sides with four goals in the contest.

Hoerauf then turned in her third goal of the game to help Capital bulk its lead up to four goals. At 8-4, the Crusaders had built its lead up to a point that the Cardinals were unable to challenge as time expired.

Husain tallied five assists in the game, marking the third time she has done so this season and the first time in a conference game. In addition to hitting the century mark for career goals, Titus also posted a game-high six points with her four assists added to her two goals. On defense, sophomore Mary Manos (Canton, Ohio) had a day after collecting three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) was held to just one goal, but also added three ground balls, four draw controls and a team-high three caused turnovers.

Prior to the match, seniors Kim Hoerauf and Julie Duren (Union, Ohio) were honored for their contributions and dedication toward the budding Capital women's lacrosse program. Each came to Capital to play sports outside of lacrosse, but migrated to Coach Stacy Wood and her staff to help build the foundation of an already-successful program.

Capital now has their place locked into the OAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament, and will play its first contest at home when the tournament schedule is released. The Crusaders have posted double-digit win totals in each of their three seasons of existence, and have now advanced to the postseason in two of those seasons.

They first have to close out the regular season against Muskingum University on Saturday, April 30 in a game that has been relocated from Muskingum to Capital. The first draw will take place at 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
