Seniors Carry the Crusaders to Sweep on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio  -- Capital University's softball seniors dominated the box score on Senior Day against Baldwin Wallace University. The Crusaders used a balanced attack and solid defense to take game one, before jumping out to a large lead in the early part of game two.

Game 1 – Capital 6, Baldwin Wallace 2

Senior centerfielder Katie Hurst (Macedonia, Ohio) set Capital (16-18, 7-9 OAC) up to score, stealing second base after singling to first. Second baseman Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) recorded an RBI with a single to left field, sending Hurst in for the score.

South Euclid, Ohio native Therese Becker scored Staten on the next at-bat on a double that found the left-field gap.

The Crusaders picked up where they left off as Bailey Walter (Ashland, Ohio) doubled to centerfield in the bottom of the third. Pam Vickers (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) then sacrificed on a bunt to advance Walter to third. Senior right fielder Ashley Knowles (Canton, Ohio) attempted the same when she got a turn at the plate but reached on a fielder's choice. However, her bunt was placed well enough to allow Walter to slide into home for Capital's third run.

Knowles eventually scored on a ball that was hit past the pitcher by Hurst. The Crusaders went on to add two more runs in the fifth inning to complete the game one victory.

Capital finished with 10 hits as Hurst, Becker and Walter contributed two apiece. Knowles and Walter led the Crusaders with two runs scored.

Game 2 – Capital 7, Baldwin Wallace 2

Walter grabbed momentum early for the Crusaders with a double to centerfield. Following a single by Vickers, an error by Baldwin Wallace (10-22, 3-13) got Knowles to first base and Walter to home for the score. Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) sacrificed out to right field, scoring Vickers from third base.

On Capital's following at-bat, Hurst earned an RBI putting the ball in play to send Knowles home. The fourth run of the inning was scored when Staten split the Yellow Jacket outfield for a single, scoring Hurst from first base.

A two-RBI double by Koss in the second and an RBI single by Becker in the third added three more runs for the Crusaders.

Capital saw 31 at-bats, collecting 11 runs and six RBIs. Knowles went 4-for-2 at the plate, adding two runs.

After pitching every inning in both games, Amber Martinelli (Allison Park, Pa.) picked up two wins, bringing her record to 10-7 on the season.

The Crusaders return to action on Monday, April 25 at Kenyon College. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m.
