Tigers Outlast Crusaders, 12-10

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a defensive-minded first half yielded just eight goals between the Capital University and Wittenberg University women's lacrosse teams, both teams turned it up in the final 30. A burst of goals by the Tigers in the latter part of the second half helped guide Wittenberg to a 12-10 victory over the Crusaders, Wednesday night at Bernlohr Stadium.

Tied 7-7 with 16:00 to go in the match, Wittenberg's Emily Wadds scored two goals just nine seconds apart and three in a three-minute span of time to bulk the Tigers' lead to 11-7.

Capital (5-2) roared back when Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) landed a free position shot. The crowd got a jolt of excitement when sophomore Regan Hanood (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) jetted down the field and then put on a vicious spin move to free herself from the defender. Her shot found the back of the net and made for a two-goal game, 11-9, with just under five minutes remaining.

The Crusaders landed a break when the Tigers' Victoria Zysik was administered a yellow card, putting Wittenberg down one player. However, the Tigers were quick in transition and Wadds scored her fifth and final goal to put Wittenberg up 12-9 with 2:46 to go. Kara Hines scored with 2:21 to go, but a late turnover quelled any comeback attempt.

Hoerauf led the Capital offense with four goals and shared the team lead in draw controls (5) with Hines. Hines finished with two goals and one assist, while also putting up a team-high three caused turnovers.

Junior Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) had a solid first half with eight of her 13 saves coming in the opening 30 minutes and a 4-4 tie heading into the half. She also grabbed three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Capital will end its three-game homestand by facing off against Augustana College (Ill.) this Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. They will then jump in OAC play with road games against Baldwin Wallace University (4/9) and Ohio Northern University (4/13).
