Women's Lacrosse Falls in Battle of Unbeatens

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University Crusaders and Kenyon College Ladies took part in a battle of unbeatens under the lights at Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Kenyon (6-0) struck first and often in the early minutes as Cassie Hudson-Heck got the momentum for her squad with a free position shot three minutes into the game. Hudson-Heck followed the opening goal with another about six minutes later, assisted by Kelley Russell. The Ladies added two more goals in the next 15 minutes to take a 4-0 lead.

The Crusaders (5-1) cut into the lead with four minutes to go in the half with a pair of goals by Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio), the second coming from a free position shot.

Hudson-Heck got by the Crusader defense with 17 seconds left in the half, scoring her third goal of the game to give the Ladies a 5-2 lead at the break.

In the second half, each squad traded goals as Kenyon used ball control and an aggressive defense to secure the victory.

Both teams were aggressive with 25 shots apiece as Kenyon held the edge in ground balls, 21-18. The Crusaders won 11 of the 16 draw controls while going 11-for-14 in their clear attempts.

Senior midfielder Jane Symmes and Hudson-Heck led Kenyon with three goals. Symmes was a force on defense causing a game-high six turnovers. Goalkeeper Allie Dumas made 11 saves.

Hines led Capital with a trio of goals, followed by Regan Hanood (Pickerington, Ohio) with two. Hines also had three caused turnovers, tying junior goalkeeper Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) for the team lead.

Wilson started at goalkeeper for the entire contest, making eight stops.

The Crusaders have a week off before returning to Bernlohr Stadium next Wednesday to face Wittenberg University at 7 p.m.
