First-Inning Explosion Highlights Capital's Win Over Wittenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University's softball team split with Wittenberg University in Tuesday's doubleheader. The two teams battled through high gusts of wind as the Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the day's first game. In game two, late errors by Capital's defense led to a Wittenberg victory.

Game 1- Capital 7, Wittenberg 1

Wittenberg (13-2-1) made early mistakes as Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) reached first base on a Tiger error. Sophomore shortstop Pam Vickers (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) advanced Staten to second with a bunt before Bailey Walter (Ashland, Ohio) loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch.

The next at-bat, Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) hit the ball in play before an error by the Wittenberg defense cost the Tigers two runs, scored by Staten and Vickers. Walter scored the third fourth run of the inning due to a bunt from Katie Hurst (Macedonia, Ohio).

Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) capped the inning off with a single up the middle that scored Koss and Hurst to give Capital (7-9) a 5-0 lead after the opening stanza.

In the fifth inning, Hurst recorded her second RBI of the game with a bunt that sent Walter across home plate. Sophomore Chianna Smitley (Chillicothe, Ohio) registered her first career RBI to allow Koss to score Capital's final run of the game.

Game 2- Capital 0, Wittenberg 6

The first two at-bats in the sixth inning resulted in singles, placing Tigers on first and second base. Missy Lee then found the gap in center field before a throwing error scored two Wittenberg runners.

Two at-bats later, Rachel Black took advantage of another Capital error that also led to Lee reaching home plate. Casey Hobbs added the final run of the game, blasting a triple down the right field line.

Bree Kilgus (Grove City, Ohio) pitched for five innings, allowing five hits, four runs and two earned runs.

Capital returns home on Friday, March 25 in its conference opening doubleheader against John Carroll University. The first game is set for 1 p.m.
