The Crusaders Split Action with the Hornets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – Capital split the doubleheader on Saturday morning against Lynchburg College. The Crusaders got the best of Lynchburg in a low-hitting affair in game one. The second game played out differently as Lynchburg exploded for nine runs and 13 hits.

Game 1: Capital-2 Lynchburg-1

The Crusaders (5-7) began the game by putting Pam Vickers (Sagamore, Hills) on base by way of a Lynchburg (5-5) error. Vickers then advanced to second on a passed ball. After Capital's second out, Marisa Koss (Ostrander, Ohio) singled, to send Vickers home for the RBI.

The Hornets tied the game up in the fourth inning when senior Danielle Powell sent the ball over the fence for a home run.

Koss came through for Capital again in the sixth stanza with a sacrifice bunt that scored Brooklyn Staten (Grove City, Ohio) from third base.

As a team, the Crusaders collected four hits on 22 at-bats. Lynchburg managed just two hits on 24 plate appearances.

Amber Martinelli (Allison Park, Pa.) pitched the entire game, picking up her first win of the season.

 Game 2: Capital-0 Lynchburg-9

Lynchburg got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the opening stanza. The Hornets duplicated that success with another three-run inning in the third, capped off by a sacrifice fly by Lauren Smith.

The Hornets got off 13 hits and nine RBIs, compared to Capital's five. Lynchburg got doubles from Kayla St. Johns and Powell.

Sophomore pitcher Bree Kilgus was on the mound for four innings, surrendering seven hits.

The Crusaders returns to action next week with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 at Bluffton University. The first game is schedule for 1 p.m.
