Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior Jenna Erwin held the hot hand as part of the Capital women's basketball team's explosive second half, aiding in their comeback victory over Marietta College on Wednesday night. The Crusaders topped the Pioneers 67-55 for their third straight victory.
Trailing 29-23 at halftime, Capital (11-9 overall, 7-6 OAC) opened up the second half on a 13-5 run to claim its first lead of the game. Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) and Erwin were part of a seven-point swing that closed the gap to four points. Erwin hit the first of her two 3-pointers in the half to give Capital that lead, 36-34.
Jaren Francis (Columbus, Ohio/Africentric) was also part of the Crusaders' big response, making a pair of close-range shots early on. She finished with 10 points and corralled five rebounds off of the bench.
Both teams jostled for the lead heading into the 13th minute, but Erwin's next three sparked another Capital run that helped them obtain a lead they would not relinquish. The 9-2 run, aided by jumpers by junior forward Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore guard Courtney Merritt (Cincinnati, Ohio) built a seven-point lead heading into the home stretch.
Thompson and Napolitano teamed up to combine for the team's next eight point while the rest of the Crusaders helped pour on the points and the defense, which kept the Pioneers off of the board for a three-minute stretch and allowed just two points in the final 4:29 of the game.
Capital shot an incredible 47.1 percent from the field and 50 percent (3-6) from behind the arc in the second half, turning around their fortunes from a first half in which they shot 25 percent from both the field and 3-point range.
Heather Booth led the Pioneers with 14 points while Brooke Borich hit for 11, despite shooting 3-for-7 on the evening. Marietta shot 36.2 percent from the floor as a team over the course of the game.
Two of Capital's double-digit scorers came from its bench players with Erwin leading both sides with a season-high 17 points and Francis' 10. Erwin hit on 7-for-12 field goals on the night.
Thompson served as the third scorer in double figures with 14 points. She has now scored 10 or more points in back-to-back games since missing a game due to injury.
Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) scored eight points but led the team with seven rebounds and five steals, as well.
With losses by both Wilmington College and Heidelberg University, Capital now stands alone in fourth place in the most recent Ohio Athletic Conference season standings.
Capital will play John Carroll University, who current is third in the OAC standings, in University Heights, Ohio this Saturday. Tipoff between the Blue Streaks (17-2, 10-2 OAC) is set for 3 p.m.
