Box Score BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Baldwin Wallace University, dropping a 58-55 decision in overtime at Ursprung Gymnasium.
Capital (15-10 overall, 11-7 OAC) built an early lead by attacking the hoop and converting seven of its first 10 shots from the field. The Crusaders built as much as an 11-point lead going into the final five minutes of the first half guided by Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) who scored six points, each. Capital took a 30-21 lead into the locker room.
Baldwin Wallace (19-6, 14-4 OAC) slowly began cutting into that lead through the first eight minutes of the second stanza. Katie Smith's 3-pointer and a jumper by Audrey Smolik made for a one-possession game at the 11:32 mark before both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes of game action. Behind a strong second half of shooting from behind the arc, Baldwin Wallace was able to evaporate the Crusaders' lead heading into a key five-minute stretch at the end of regulation.
Smith hit her second trey of the half to cut Capital's lead to a mere point with 5:26 to play and after a Capital miss on its next possession, the Yellow Jackets came back to score the go-ahead bucket. That sparked a 9-0 response from the hosts which included back-to-back layups from Clara Lemmon to build BW's lead to five points.
Capital may have lost the lead, but it did not lose its edge. Their resilience helped them erase BW's advantage using key makes by junior guard Simmone Gage (Dayton, Ohio) and Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio). Gage tied it up at 52-52 with free throws with 1:07 to go. Defense prevailed in the final minute as both teams were unable to put forth the go-ahead basket.
Three turnovers combined with shooting 1-for-7 told the tale for Capital's overtime session. Despite that, they still kept close by allowing just two field goals to the host. After Baldwin Wallace took a 56-55 lead with a Smolik layup, a charge call went against the Crusaders, inducing a free throw battle. The Jackets went just 2-for-4 from the line giving Capital one last chance, but Gage's last-second 3-point attempt was off the mark, resulting in a win for Baldwin Wallace.
Gage led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds plus added five steals and three assists. Erwin finished with 11 points off of the bench. Rounding out the list of double-digit scorers is Thompson (10) and Napolitano (10).
The loss did not have any bearing on where either team will be seeded heading into the OAC Tournament. Baldwin Wallace was already locked into the No. 3 seed and Capital into the No. 4 seed. The rest of the bracket will be determined on Sunday after two OAC games were postponed due to weather conditions.
What is certain is that Capital will host a second-round tournament game on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Crusaders will play the winner of the No. 8 versus No. 5 game.
The OAC Women's Basketball Tournament is set up in a double-bye format, where the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will not play until Thursday night's semi-final round. On Monday, the No. 8 and No. 5 teams will tangle, as will the No. 7 and No. 6 seeded teams. Tuesday marks the quarter-final round where No. 3 will play the winner of the No. 7 and No. 6 seeded game, while Capital will play the winner of No. 8 versus No. 5. Thursday's semifinals will determine who will play in the OAC Tournament Championship game, set for Saturday afternoon.
More details and official brackets will be provided on Sunday evening.
