WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In a game where records were thrown out the window, round two of the rivalry between the Capital University and Otterbein University women's basketball teams provided a down-to-the-wire thriller, decided by
Simonne Gage with mere seconds remaining. The Crusaders extended its current winning streak to six games after defeating the Cardinals 74-72 Saturday evening at the Rike Center.
After overcoming a double-digit deficit, Otterbein (5-18, 2-14 OAC) upped the pressure with its deep game and temporarily took the lead going into the final five minutes of the contest. Capital responded by pushing its offense up the floor and driving the lane, resulting in buckets by Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) and Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) to help the Crusaders regain the advantage.
Amariah Huck tied the game at 72 all when she made an up-and-under move to the hoop, but that only added fuel to Capital's fire when Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) took matters into her own hands. With 14 seconds left on the clock, the junior found a path the basket and from just outside of the half-circle, hit a runner with 3.5 seconds to go resulting in the game-winning bucket.
Otterbein took its final timeout but with short time remaining, they were unable to find a quality shot and its last-second heave was off the mark, giving Capital the win.
Capital held the early advantage, benefitting from a 35-31 halftime score. That lead escalated to 13 points with another solid performance by the Crusaders at the free-throw line. Capital went 17-for-21 (.810) in the second half alone, with Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) doing a lot of that damage herself. The junior continued to drive the lane and was sent to the line 11 times in the second half, and converted 10 of those tries. Erwin finished the game with a team-high 17 points.
Amariah Huck continued to work the low post and ended as the game's high scorer (28). She added 11 rebounds in a double-double effort for the Cardinals.
Four of Capital's starting five finished with 10 or more points. Napolitano went for 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) put up 10 while battling injury in limited minutes, though she conserved her energy to finish the game strongly. She also had eight rebounds to lead the Crusaders on the glass.
Shelby Sigman (Bellbrook, Ohio) hit 50 percent of her 10 shot attempts to end the night with 10 points, as well.
Emily Moran (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) turned in significant minutes despite not putting up a point. In Thompson's absence in the first half, they combined to pull down seven rebounds and Moran added one block for the second consecutive game.
The victory extends Capital's winning streak to a season-high six games and completes the regular-season sweep of Otterbein.
With Wilmington College falling on Saturday, Capital now has a two-game lead over the Quakers for the fourth seed. Another win would lock up that spot in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Crusaders will play Heidelberg University (9-14, 7-9 OAC) at home on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Capital Center.
